tony allen the source

Curiously, though, for a drummer who absorbed so much of his percussive knowledge from the work of Max Roach and Art Blakey, there was little place in Allen’s catalog for actual jazz until 2017.

Highly recommended . tribute to Blakey and his Jazz Messengers. Tony Allen brought together an ensemble of high-prolific Paris-based Jazz musicians, the guitarist Indy Dibongue from Cameroon and Damon Albarn, who contributes a piano part to “Cool Cats.” The album boasts with a variety timbre and a diversity of colours and the complete analogue recording makes for a warm and very present sound. Listen free to Tony Allen – The Source (Moody Boy, Bad Roads and more). As The Source progresses, it delves deeper into a more recognizable Afrobeat sound almost as if to create a parallel between Allen’s own discoveries as they became infused into his own creations. Stunning. Allen’s first full length work for Blue Note Records fuses the sounds of Africa, the influence of American greats such as Art Blakey and Gil Evans with a Parisian elegance that leaves The Source difficult to categorise as purely jazz. “Tony’s Blues” is a kind of midway point between these two poles, while “Wolf Eats Wolf” is proper Africa 70-style rhythmic vamp. Wow. Truly a delight on the ears.

The opening "Moody Boy" starts dramatically with a bluesy rubato tuba statement from Zimmermann, played with a soulful urgency that improbably brings to mind John Coltrane, and then leaps headlong into a crisp, funky groove marked by Vincent Taurelle's juicy organ.

Beautifully arranged, recorded, mastered and pressed.
